Negotiations at critical stage as Cyprus talks kick off: United Nations chief

Posted November 09, 2016

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon opened on Monday morning, in Mont-Pelerin, talks between Anastasiades and Akinci for the discussion of the territory issue and all other outstanding issues interdependently.

Sigma's sources have said that President Nicos Anastasiades, Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, their two negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis and Baris Burcu, and their spokespersons Nikos Christodoulides and Baris Brucu will take part in the meeting at 5:30 pm. He said the United Nations wasn't willing to wait another 50 years for a solution.

Any deal would then need to be voted on by both communities.

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) - The United Nations chief on Monday urged the rival leaders of ethnically divided Cyprus to seize the opportunity for a reunification deal that he said is within their grasp.

The two leaders will attempt to agree on the internal boundary between two future constituent states, allowing for the return of some areas in Turkish-held northern Cyprus to the Greek Cypriots.

Negotiations that will continue until November 11 are due to discuss the previously intractable issue of territorial adjustments on the Mediterranean resort island, divided since 1974, when Turkey intervened in response to an Athens-inspired coup seeking union with Greece. Only Turkey recognizes a Turkish Cypriot declaration of independence and keeps more than 35,000 troops in the north. Now those supporting a peace deal believe any accord must be negotiated by Cypriots themselves. Second, it would unlock cooperation between not-so-friendly neighbors on pumping out huge gas deposits from beneath the eastern Mediterranean seabed.

Greek Cypriots want a government that works, and for as many of their people who lost homes and property in the north during the war to be able to reclaim their property or be properly compensated. Turkey's increasingly authoritarian ways and aggressive rhetoric does little to inspire confidence among Greek Cypriots.

Negotiations are due to discuss the previously intractable issue of territorial adjustments on the Mediterranean resort island - a main bone of contention during four decades of discord between its Greek- and Turkish-speaking communities. But officials warn that if there's failure this time, things in Cyprus won't remain static.

Specifically, it's the Time Stone, which explains its user's ability to manipulate time (and give the film a pretty cool climax). That looks to come from not as popular characters like Black Panther , Ant-Man, and Captain Marvel .
