Colts trade TE Dwayne Allen to Patriots

Posted March 09, 2017

The Patriots need that coveted No. 2 tight end to pair alongside often-injured All-Pro Rob Gronkowski. What appeared to trigger the tweet?

It was clear the Patriots benefited from having a solid tight end along with Rob Gronkowski last season, and with Martellus Bennett seemingly departing via free agency, the team needed to find a replacement.

Gronkowski and Allen reportedly now are teammates.

Deaths Reported After Train Collides With Vehicle In Mississippi
The National Transportation Safety Board says the freight train was traveling at about 19 miles per hour at time of the collision. The charter bus trip to Mississippi's coast began in Austin, Texas.

The New England Patriots apparently are looking for some insurance at tight end, acquiring Dwayne Allen from the Colts, according to multiple reports. Allen's remaining cap hits are $4,937,500 in 2017, $5 million in 2018 and $7.4 million in 2019.

So, what does this mean for the Patriots? In a piece headlined, "Patriots' greatest free-agent impact starts with Matt Forte, Dwayne Allen", the case was made why Allen would be a ideal complement to Gronkowski as a 1-2 tight end punch. In 2014, Allen tied for the team lead with eight touchdown catches. Allen, a 2012 third-round pick, never flourished into the prolific pass-catcher the Colts expected him to be.

Twin Rhode Island sisters, 97, die in falls on frigid weekend
The Providence Journal reported that Haley lived at 21 Opechee Drive, Barrington, and Williams lived in East Providence. Authorities arrived at the scene and rushed both women to Rhode Island Hospital in nearby Providence.

Don't question the Patriots' ability to scout the rest of the NFL. The Patriots love tight ends who can score, so it won't be a surprise at all if Allen fits right in with New England's offense.

Allen, at 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, is one of the top blocking tight ends in the NFL. While Doyle was achieving career highs with 59 receptions, 584 yards and five touchdowns, Allen finished with 35 catches, 406 yards and six TDs.

Allen doesn't have the receiving pedigree of Bennett.
