USA, DR Clinch, Venezuela Pushed to Tiebreaker Game with Italy

Miguel Cabrera hit a solo homer and Rougned Odor had a long run-scoring single during a three-run ninth inning and Venezuela rallied to beat Italy, 4-3, on Monday night in Guadalajara to qualify for the second round of the World Baseball Classic. In a Pool F matchup taking place at Petco Park in San Diego, the US (2-1 in the first round of pool play) will face Venezuela (2-2).

Puerto Rico, which went 3-0 to win Venezuela's first-round pool, and the defending champion Dominican Republic are the other teams in Pool F. Two will advance to the single-elimination semifinals at Dodger Stadium next week. Venezuela will play Italy in a one-game tiebreaker Monday night, with the victor advancing to the second round.

Redshirt freshman Dazon Ingram led Alabama with 17 points before fouling out of the contest in the final two minutes. It committed 15 turnovers, Isaiah Briscoe struggled offensively and the team shot 6-for-16 from 3-point range.

Mexico, of course, was knocked out of the tournament over a controversial tiebreaker rule.

Both the official Twitter accounts of the World Baseball Classic and Major League Baseball stated that Mexico would advance to Monday's tiebreaker with Italy. "It was a surprise but we are happy to get another chance".
