Patrick Ewing Returns to Georgetown as Head Basketball Coach

Posted April 06, 2017

Georgetown has hired former star player Patrick Ewing to be the school's new head coach, the team announced. For a brief window of time the Big East was the biggest show in the country and Ewing of Georgetown and Mullin of St. John's were the faces of the conference. Come next season, when the focus has shifted to the fact that this still-celebrated program has failed to draw interest from any of its local talent and missed three of the past four NCAA tournaments, we'll see how the legacy choice works out. During his time at Georgetown from 1981-85, Ewing led the school to three NCAA championship appearances and a title.

Meanwhile, programs such as Villanova and Xavier have filled the void in the new Big East.

He was now serving as an associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets. He went on to say how Georgetown is still his home and how great an honor it is for him to become his alma mater's next head coach.

CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON: Xi is a very confident fellow and probably thinks he's going to come in and get one over on President Trump. McFarland, the deputy White House national security adviser, remarked in a previous interview with the Financial Times .

Ewing has been an National Basketball Association assistant coach since 2002-2003 and is now the associate head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. But my goal is to be a head coach in the National Basketball Association. The Vertical reported late last night that Ewing would formally interview for the job at Georgetown.

It's unclear what system Ewing plans to install at Georgetown, but his National Basketball Association background suggests perhaps a style vastly different than that of his predecessor, who ran a motion-based offense with principles from his previous head coaching stop at Princeton.

Whether Patrick Ewing can reverse that trend will depend on how well he adjusts to the recruiting trail.

President Donald Trump tweeted that Flynn, his former adviser, should ask for immunity because he's facing "a witch hunt". But the White House says the problem is that Flynn's conversations were in the news at all.

It appears, instead of waiting around for an NBA head coaching opportunity, he jumped at a college one - which actually follows a recent hiring trend in college basketball.

Now, Georgetown has gotten rid of JT3 but replaced him with the best college player the elder Thompson ever coached. Is the hiring of Ewing a ideal match for the Georgetown Hoyas, or a step in the wrong direction? Ewing is the all-time leader in total rebounds (1,316), most blocked shots (493) and most games played (143). In one particular instance, after nearly being plunked by an orange thrown from the stands, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim grabbed a microphone and threatened to forfeit the game if his fans did anything like that again.
