Cancer-Causing HPV Virus Affects 25 Percent of US Men

The most serious consequences of the virus still fall on women, according to CDC data: About 39,00 HPV-associated cancers occur in the United States each year, with about 23,000 among women, and about 16,000 among men.

In fact, nearly every sexually active man or woman will get it during their lifetime.

As more people are vaccinated, further declines in HPV and the cancers it causes will be seen, she said.

In addition, the new version of Gardasil improved protection against HPV-related cancers in the vagina, vulva, penis, anus, rectum and oropharynx - the tongue and tonsil area at the back of the throat.

Some types of HPV can cause genital warts and are considered low risk, with a small chance for causing cancer, the CDC report said.

To estimate the prevalence of HPV infection among US adults aged 18 to 59, the researchers used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2014.

Around 99 per cent of cervical cancer diagnoses are related to infections like HPV.

"We tend to overlook the fact that 20 percent of us are carrying the virus that can cause cancer", Geraldine McQuillan, lead author of the report and a senior infectious disease epidemiologist in the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys at the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, told The Washington Post.

The study was conducted using Gardasil 9, a version of the vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration in late 2014.

The new rules came after years of campaigns from cancer experts insisting an easier schedule would encourage more people to protect themselves from the sexually-transmitted infection.
