DALLAS (AP) - Dallas police say a firefighter has been shot and is being transported to a local hospital. "Dallas Police Department is searching for the suspect who they believe is still in the vicinity", it said. The paramedic underwent surgery and is in critical condition. All Dallas paramedics/emergency medical technicians are trained first as firefighters and are cross trained to provide emergency medical care.

The City of Dallas released a statement saying officers were responding to a shooting about 11.30am on Monday (4.30am Tuesday, NZ time) when a Dallas Fire-Rescue EMT Unit was struck.

UPDATE 1:10 p.m.: The Dallas Morning News reported paramedics may have been responded to a suicide call.

The neighbor stepped outside where Brown shot him, say police, who have not identified the neighbor.

The incident is taking place not far from the intersection of Dolphin Road and Interstate 30.

Police told NBC 5 DFR was called to a home when someone came out of a home and opened fire. His actions saved the victim's life, Pughes said.

"Thoughts and prayers are with all impacted", Dallas Fire-Rescue tweeted earlier.

Dallas police now have a home surrounded on Reynolds Avenue, according to WFAA's Rebecca Lopez.

For several hours Monday police described the scene as "active and very risky". Rawlings says the threat to the neighborhood is over.

A police sergeant rushed in and managed to pull the paramedic to safety, as the suspect continued to fire his gun towards the officers.

Dallas was the scene last July of a mass shooting of police officers in which five were killed and seven wounded.

A second person also was found dead in the home, though no details have been released about that person.

An officer fired a shotgun at Brown, and a pellet may have hit Brown, who retreated into his home, Blankenbaker said. The neighbor, whose name wasn't released, was also taken to the hospital.

The shooter who allegedly opened fire on Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighter-paramedics was 36-year-old Derick Lamont Brown, WFAA's Charlotte Huffman has learned.

It is believed the gunman was in the street shooting at that point, Pughes said.

The paramedic was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas by police officers and was in critical condition while undergoing surgery Monday afternoon.

The shooting ignited more questions about whether first responders like paramedics should wear body armor so they can quickly enter a shooting scene.
