Clinical bowling show powers Punjab to 14-run win over KKR

Posted May 10, 2017

The pick of the bowlers for Punjab was Rahul Tewatia who had figures of two for 18. To confirm their second place, the KKR needs their game win as must over KXIP. It wasn't quite as spectacular as the one against RCB and didn't last as long either, but, once again, it was quite effective.

Despite Chris Lynn's 52-ball 84, the bowlers did a superb job to restrict KKR to 153/6 in 20 overs chasing a modest 168. When Lynn was run out in the 18th over after hitting eight fours and three sixes, the game clearly swung in favour of Kings XI.

In the backend of the run-chase, with the required run rate climbing rapidly and the batsmen desperate to find boundaries, Mohit Sharma and Sandeep Sharma came together, bowled smartly and denied the batsmen any pace. However, Mohit hit back strongly after being hit for two boundaries as the medium pacer got rid off Narine for 18. Kings XI will play against the Knight Riders, who placed in the second position, at present.

Needing to win to stay afloat in the tournament, Kings XI made a wobbling start after they being put in to bat but made a late recovery to put up a respectable total.

Manan Vohra (25, 16b, 4x4), again, had one of those makes-a-decent-start-and-then-throws-it-away innings, with Umesh Yadav picking up his wicket off a short delivery, before Martin Guptill (12, 16b, 1x4) failed to make his presence felt in this must-win, falling to Narine after missing a sweep shot. Punjab had an average start but skipper Maxwell and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha provided the much-needed momentum in between.

They did that really well with a 71-run partnership, with Maxwell taking off in the back end of that alliance.

Despite gaining a draw, the result meant Juventus' run of 33 successive home league wins came to an end. Substitute Diego Farias netted a consolation for Cagliari in stoppage time.

KXIP: 167/6 in 20 overs. Maxwell picked up two sixes off Colin de Grandhomme in the twelfth over and pulled Ankit Rajpoot to the midwicket boundary in the thirteenth. KXIP did well in the 2 overs that followed, allowing just 7 runs to KKR.

Wicketkeeper batsman Robin Uthappa made a comeback to the Kolkata side replacing Sheldon Jackson while chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav replacing leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was the other change to the side that thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday.
