Sunrisers Hyderabad thrash Gujarat Lions by eight wickets, seal play-offs spot

Posted May 14, 2017

Sunrisers Hyderabad will have to keep it simple. Gujarat Lions stand at the seventh position, wining four and losing nine from 13 matches played till date. A win will give them an outside chance of making the top two, and avoiding the eliminator. SRH have 15 points from 13 matches, leaving them on the edge of a very testing abyss, where their fortunes could teeter and fall over, or they could be back on solid ground.

The Green Park stadium in Kanpur was in the news for all the wrong reasons yesterday amid allegations of match-fixing and pitch tampering.

Gujarat Lions 154 all out, 19.2 overs [Kishan 61, Smith 54, Siraj 4-32] lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 158-2, 18.1 overs [Warner 69*, Shankar 63*, Praveen 2-22] by eight wickets.

It has hosted one game this season, a high-scoring one between DD and GL. Needing a win after Kings XI Punjab's recent heroics, Mohammed Siraj inspired a brilliant SRH bowling effort in the second half of the Gujarat Lions innings, before David Warner did what David Warner always does.

It would take one hell of an effort from the struggling Lions to upstage Sunrisers, whom they are yet to beat in their three head-to-head games so far.

With 15 points from seven wins and five losses in 13 games, Sunrisers now hold the fourth spot at the IPL points table, while the Lions are already out of the game nearly with only eight points from 13 matches the team is having.

Chasing 155, Warner showed how he can curb his explosive nature and play a calculated innings when needed. The last 10 wickets fell for a mere 43 runs. Apart from that, there was no hope for Suresh Raina's boys. He has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign by Gujarat. Fittingly, Warner disdainfully smashed him over his head to finish off the match.

Suresh Raina's side have been able to win just 4 matches in 13 matches despite being the table toppers of the previous tournament.
