Polls close in Virginia gubernatorial primaries

Pollsters say the race is just too close to call.

Northam, a usually low-key pediatric neurologist, won running as a pragmatist with the state Democratic establishment's firm support.

Frank Von Richter said he voted for Northam because he likes that the lieutenant governor is more "middle of the road" than Perriello and thinks he will work better with a Republican-controlled General Assembly.

"Both of these candidates fit into the ideological tradition of (Democrats Terry) McAuliffe, (Tim) Kaine and (Mark) Warner", said Democratic strategist Jesse Ferguson.

"All I am going to do is put forward ideas that will get Virginia going again", Gillespie said.

Northam received endorsements early on from almost every top Democrat in the state, including McAuliffe and U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and McAuliffe, who can not seek a consecutive term in office.

Perriello made a surprise entrance into the race in January and faced an uphill climb from the beginning. As a Republican candidate, many in-party voters and opponents are questioning why he has never quite fully addressed Trump on his campaign trail.

With almost 90 percent of the ballots counted, Gillespie was leading in Virginia's gubernatorial primary by a less than 1 percent margin over Republican rival Corey Stewart in a race that appeared headed to a likely recount.

On the airwaves Northam has branded the president a "narcissistic maniac", while one of Perriello's closing spots has talked about fighting "tyranny" at home.

Both candidates have pledged fierce opposition to Trump and his policies. The Democratic primary contest has been a hard fought battle between Northam, the state party establishment's favorite, and insurgent candidate Tom Perriello.

Corey Stewart, a Minnesota-born lawyer with a soft spot for the Confederacy, almost pulled off a stunning upset in Tuesday's Republican primary for governor of Virginia.

For the Republicans, Gillespie was polling ahead of Stewart, 44 percent to 42 percent around 8 p.m., while state Sen.

And capitalizing on the recent trend where insider status isn't a desirable label in GOP primaries, Stewart has tried to turn Gillespie's stellar resume - former RNC chairman, former adviser to President George W. Bush, near-successful 2014 Senate nominee - against him. Neither face a primary election challenger.

The Democratic governor tweeted that he and his wife, Dorothy, voted Tuesday morning.

On June 13, I will proudly cast my vote for Tom Perriello.

Widely endorsed and one of three Republican candidates, Gillespie has made sure to answer every probable question for his voters before the primary election on Tuesday. She said she was leaning toward voting for Northam in the Democratic primary but liked what she heard from Perriello at his town hall last week in Leesburg.

She called for a medical timeout during the interval, before returning to the court with heavy bandage on her thigh. If Pliskova defeated Halep on Thursday, she would have automatically claimed the No. 1 spot in the WTA rankings.

Meanwhile, if Perriello or Northam win, it will be almost impossible for Virginia's voters to elect a Democratic House of Delegates - even if a majority of those voters cast a ballot for a Democratic candidate.
