On Thursday, Trump took to Twitter to call the probe "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!".

President Trump confirmed Friday that he is under investigation for firing FBI Director James Comey.

Until Trump's Friday-morning Twitter burst, only the Washington Post's sources had indicated that Trump was being investigated for possible obstruction of justice.

"Mr. Trump's apparent reference to Mr. Rosenstein, who oversees the Russian Federation investigation because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from it, came just hours after an oddly worded statement from Mr. Rosenstein complaining about leaks in the case".

In an interview with NBC's Lester Holt on May 11, Trump said he was "going to fire [Comey] regardless of recommendation" from Rosenstein and Sessions.

Special Counsel Mueller was reportedly planning to interview intelligence officials on whether Mr Trump got rid of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, James Comey, in May to hamper an inquiry into his sacked national security adviser, Michael Flynn. It was not clear whether Trump's tweet was referring to Rosenstein or Mueller, but most news organizations identified the former as Trump's target. "I hope you can let this go".

Citing a memo from the general counsel's office of Trump's transition team, the Times said former members were given the order on Thursday for any information involving Russian Federation or Ukraine in the latest sign of the investigations' expanding reach.
