Possessing an estimated production budget of $217 million (before marketing), the film's haul doesn't appear to be too damaging, but the production budget doesn't include The Last Knight's massive advertising campaign that coincides with an IP as popular as Transformers.

Paramount has already suffered flops at the box office this year with "Ghost in the Shell" and "Baywatch". Now, attention is turned toward a trio of releases next weekend, as the box office hopes for a shot in the arm from "Despicable Me 3", "Baby Driver", and "The House".

By comparison, Transformers: Age of Extinction earned $245.4 million total domestically and $858.6 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $1.1 04 billion.

Wonder Woman is holding on strong to that 2nd place, now with $24.9 million, off by -39.6%.

Disney and Pixar's "Cars 3" also looks to earn $25.2 million domestically during its second weekend.

Entertainment Studios' shark tale "47 Meters Down" placed fourth with an estimated 7.43 million USA dollars in its second weekend.

But digging below these opening weekend numbers could give pause to forward-looking Paramount executives and other investors even while they celebrate a profitable film boosted by lucrative product-placements and a minimum box office guarantee. That is the sixteenth biggest second-weekend drop of all-time and the worst since February, when the action flick Collide set a new record at an 89% drop.

It is currently targeting perhaps $175 million in the USA, with a tiny profit seeming probable now based on the $230 million production budget. "Transformers" cost at least $350 million to make and market worldwide, with the cost shouldered by Paramount and a variety of financing partners, including the Chinese film company Huahua Media. Wityh a modest $38 million budget, it should be able to eke out a profit on a likely $75 million final domestic gross.

The Marvel sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still the top-grossing summer movie - for now - and collected an estimated $3M, off 41%. And Star Trek's returns are also diminishing; the series' three films have raked in progressively less at the box office during their theatrical runs, on the back of opening weekend performances that have steadily declined.
