Post-truth, the Oxford English Dictionary's word of the year 2016, will be in the latest edition of the dictionary alongside 1,200 new words and phrases, the publisher said Tuesday.

Just in time for this year's Wimbledon tournament, the Oxford English Dictionary has included 50 new terms relating to tennis, such as "forced error", "chip and charge" and "career slam".

The OED tracks the changes and developments in word meanings over time and it the definite record of the English language.

Both words gained popularity as a result of events in the 2016 presidential elections of the United States and the issues around race and police shootings.

The dictionary said "post-truth" denotes "circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping political debate or public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief".

"Baltic" has also been added, which Scottish and Irish readers will already know the definition of.
