Stanton, rookies battle for Home Run Derby glory

Posted July 11, 2017

One of our favorite sporting events of the year is the MLB Home Run Derby, as hours of our favorite sluggers cracking dingers over the fence is about as entertaining as it gets.

How will Aaron Judge measure up against Giancarlo Stanton in tonight's MLB Home Run Derby from Miami (ESPN, ESPN2, 8 p.m.)? This year's contest is at Marlins Park in Miami. Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger is the three seed and faces six seed Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies.

Both Stanton and Judge are huge stars and huge physically.

The defending champion and hometown favourite is Miami's Giancarlo Stanton. He's averaged a home run every 10.1 at bats and is third in the majors with a.613 slugging percentage (Judge is first at.697).

Major League Baseball saw its annual All-Star Week kick off over the weekend with a variety of entertaining events. Stanton has 26 home runs this season through 86 games.

Then there's Bellinger, who wasn't playing full-time until late April but still has 25 home runs.

Marcus Morris headed to Celtics in two-player exchange
The 26-year-old guard was dealt along with a second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons for forward Marcus Morris yesterday. Bradley is in the final year of his current contract and is set to make a little more than $8.8M this upcoming season.

For Judge, who has 30 homers on the season, it's a chance to let loose away from the pressures of the American League playoff race-not that his performances in the first half of the season have given away many signs of tension. He will face New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, the No. 8 seed, in the opening round at Marlins Park. Sano is in just his third season and already approaching career highs in home runs and RBI.

Thirty seconds of bonus time will also be given if a player hits two home runs of 440 feet or more.

Sanchez missed 21 games with a right biceps injury, which helps explain why he has the lowest total of all the competitors. Frazier was still with the Reds when he won it in Cincinnati two years ago.
