Netanyahu Vows To Bring Home Guard From Jordan

Israel's Foreign Ministry said on Monday that a security guard at the country's embassy in Jordan opened fire, killing two Jordanians, after being attacked by one of them with a screwdriver.

Israel's foreign ministry failed to refer to such demands in its statement, but said the guard has diplomatic immunity, according to global conventions.

Reports said the owner of the residential building used by the embassy was hit with a stray bullet and killed. In a sign of the importance Israel places on its ties with Jordan, the Israeli government moved quickly to restore calm.

Israel's Security Cabinet met for several hours Monday evening in an effort to resolve the crisis over security measures on the Temple Mount and the escalating diplomatic crisis with Jordan.

Following the attack, the Israeli deputy ambassador remained in Cairo; 85 staff members and their families returned to Israel.

The Jordanian government has issued a court order forbidding the departure from the country of an Israeli embassy official after he had killed in self-defense one Jordanian carpenter and injured another on Sunday in his apartment in the embassy compound.

The Israeli guard was lightly hurt, the media reports said.

Earlier in the weekend, on Friday night, three Israelis were killed in their home in the West Bank settlement of Halamish when police say a young Palestinian man breached the settlement's security fence and stabbed them to death.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry statement said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is also the foreign minister, had spoken to the security guard and to ambassador Einat Schlein and stressed that the guard had immunity from questioning and prosecution.

As reported on RTE, Israel did not want the news of the two Jordanian's who died, to be public knowledge.

The king said immediate measures should be taken to restore stability in the holy site and end the continued tensions, underlining the need to remove all security measures taken by Israel.

In September 2011, seven months after the popular uprising in Egypt, hundreds of protesters against Egypt's ruling generals, broke into the Israeli embassy in Cairo tearing down large sections of a security wall.
