The entirely unofficial Big Ben Clock is still bonging on Twitter

The Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake said the House of Commons commission, which is responsible for the Palace of Westminster's maintenance, was encouraging people to witness the halting of the bell's bongs. It is not due to resume its regular duties until 2021.

"The Elizabeth Tower, home to the Great Clock and Big Ben, is now undergoing a complex programme of renovation work that will safeguard it for future generations", said a statement issued by parliament.

"This essential programme of works will safeguard the clock on a long-term basis, as well as protecting and preserving its home".

He then failed in an attempt to convince fellow Labour MP Jess Phillips to join his vigil before declaring: "These are the chimes of freedom rolling across Westminster".

Big Ben will not be heard for the next four years - except for special events such as New Year's Eve. He said had it known that one of Britain's most endearing symbols would be silenced, officials would have reconsidered the matter.

That's sparked a political debate, with Prime Minister Teresa May among those to chime in.

Watzke added in his Sky Germany interview: "You have to talk about the role of the glorious club FC Barcelona ". If it is fulfilled, Dembélé will be transferred this summer.

The decision to silence Big Ben has been one of the few political stories around in the first true "silly season" for several years, with nearly no major political news around for reporters to cover while parliament is in recess.

The 13-ton bell will still sound for special occasions such as New Year's Eve, but parliamentary officials say the bonging must be muted while the fix work is being carried out.

Earlier this year, Downing Street said Britain would leave the European Union "when Big Ben bongs midnight" on March 29 2019, the deadline for the two-year Article 50 withdrawal process.

The roof of the tower will be stripped off and restored, the bell frame repaired, leaks into the clock room stemmed and a lift installed.

The 29 million pound restoration of the Big Ben was signed off in 2015 by the Commons Administration Committee.

"It's a great source of comfort there, a sense of security".

'Even if it is more expensive, if it is done in half the time everyone benefits'.

John Bercow's love life could be in jeopardy if Big Ben's bongs are kept silent.

The bell's sound became associated with Britain through World War II radio news broadcasts, and its tower is believed to be the most photographed building in the UK.

It is a measure of "crazy" to the minister of Brexit David Davis, a project "completely mad" to the conservative mp James Gray. The total cost of repairs?

The mood was light-hearted - it is, after all, just a bell - but total silence fell as the first bong sounded.
