A man has been shot dead after attacking two soldiers with a machete in the centre of Brussels.

The soldiers suffered minor injuries, one to the hand and the other to the face.

Their presence has been reinforced since suicide bombers struck Zavantem Airport and Maalbeek metro station in March 2016, killing 32 people and wounding hundreds more.

He had shouted "Allahu Akbar" (Arabic for "God is great") during the attack, witnesses said.

A short while after the incident, United Kingdom media outlets reported a similar terror attack by a suspect near Buckingham Palace, and today, United Kingdom counter-terrorism police released additional details about the attack. The threat is now at level three, the second highest, which indicates a "serious and real" threat, but not an imminent attack.

The attack took place around 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on a street in central Brussels.

An eyewitness in the London attack, Kiana Williamson, said she saw police officers trying to wrestle a man out of a auto that had stopped near the palace, one of the city's main tourist attractions and the London home of Queen Elizabeth 11.

Prime Minister Charles Michel tweeted: "Incident in # Brussels". Our security services remain on alert.
