Hope and Brathwaite shine again as Windies scent victory

Posted August 30, 2017

Only Australia, with 404 for 3 back in 1948, had made more to win in the fourth innings of a Headingley Test. Broad tried in vain to catch a powerful shot from Brathwaite and ended up inadvertently deflecting the ball onto the stumps at the non-striker's end with his thigh, meaning that Kyle Hope was run out for an unfortunate duck.

Stuart Broad had a hand in both wickets to fall on the final morning at Headingley - literally in the case of a freakish run out of Kyle Hope - but Kraigg Brathwaite escaped two dropped catches to continue his outstanding match. If West Indies had been set a ridiculously high target they would have shut up shop for a draw.

However, Brathwaite and Shai Hope, who both scored centuries in the first innings total of 427, put on 144 for the third wicket to settle some nerves.

Moeen Ali was operating from the Kirkstall Lane End.

The West Indies continued to dominate with the bat as Hope and Jermaine Blackwood put together a 74-run partnership to leave the West Indies just two runs away from victory. This was not an opportunity to pass up and Jermaine Blackwood signalled his intentions nearly immediately with a larruped four over midwicket off Moeen and two wild hacks at Woakes.

He then survived a potential stumping as Blackwood, who was put down by Stokes in the deep, took off his helmet in preparation for scoring the winning runs only to be stumped off Moeen with two required.

Fifth day, on a used wicket against high-quality bowling, great knock [from Shai Hope]. England's bowlers toiled, but there was plenty of loose stuff which meant the run rate never got out of hand for Windies.

West Indies' Shai Hope recorded a second hundred of the match at Headingley on day five.
