U.S. President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress would have a hard time slashing the corporate tax rate to below 26 percent, even if they eliminated almost every business tax preference, according to a study released on Wednesday.

During a meeting with a group of bipartisan lawmakers, President Donald Trump told reporters that working on a bipartisan tax reform is a "positive thing".

"That is more important than anything else".

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, told other House Republicans during a closed-door meeting that they needed to unify or the effort to cut taxes could fail, according to two people in the room.

Gleckman said policymakers could pay for tax cuts by finding new sources of revenue to compensate for lower rates, rather than expanding the deficit.
