Russia Accuses US of Cooperating with ISIS in Syria

Ryabkov said that USA claims of being in Syria principally to battle the jihadist group were not equal to its actions on the ground, in what he called a "two-faced" Syria policy.

Asapov is the highest-ranking Russian military officer to be killed in Syria.

Lieutenant-General Valery Asapov was killed in Syria, when Islamic State militants (the terrorist organisation is banned in Russia) attacked Russian and Syrian troops.

His death was "the price paid in blood" for USA hypocrisy, Russia's deputy foreign minister said.

In Deir al-Zor, the Islamic militants are battling two separate offensives, launched by the SDF on one side and the Syrian army and its allies on the other. "Despite the United States strongholds being located in the Isis areas, no screening patrol has been organised at them".

The convergence of the two rival offensives has increased tensions in Deir al-Zor.

But he was "mortally wounded" after a mortar strike was carried out by ISIS on Sunday.
