Nintendo Switch Update 4.0 Allows Gamecube Controller Support

Posted October 26, 2017

Classic Nintendo GameCube controllers can now work with the Nintendo Switch via a USB adapter, following a version 4.0.0 system update released late last week. And where there's a console that supports the GameCube controller, you better believe there's a mass of people hoping that this means Virtual Console or Super Smash Bros. news is on the way. For example, there's no home button so you'll need to swap controllers to get back to the main menu. According to Ars Technica, third-party adapters aren't as dependable as Nintendo's official Gamecube controller adapter. Thereafter, the Switch console will read it, allowing players to use the controller for any Switch game.

However, controls at that time were very much limited, making the controller nearly unusable with most Switch games, notes TechRadar.

Apart from the GameCube controller and video capture support, the update also brings 12 new icons for two different games. Though we would prefer that Nintendo clearly list all of the features that each firmware update brings to the table, being able to now use GameCube controllers with the Switch is a pleasant surprise. If you don't want one, but still hate your Joy-Cons, the Switch also supports certain Bluetooth controllers.
