Trump Opens the Door to Campaigning for Roy Moore

But he was unusually quiet when it came to the scandal enveloping Alabama Republican Roy Moore's Senate campaign, only addressing it directly a week after returning to the U.S. - on Tuesday afternoon - when he told reporters outside the White House he was standing by the GOP nominee. "We don't need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones", said the president.

Several women have accused Moore of sexual misconduct, including assault, when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. While Trump did not go as far as to say he didn't believe the women accusing Moore of misconduct, his emphasis on Moore's denials amount to the same thing. However, in the wake of a wave of women coming forward across nearly every industry with accusations of sexual misconduct, Speier said that the result would now be different.

Trump said he would tell reporters next week whether he planned to campaign with Moore.

Dean Young, Moore's campaign adviser, said that Alabamiams can not elect Doug "the liberal Democrat" Jones because he will back judges who support partial-birth abortions.

President Trump said he is "very happy" that women are speaking out about their experiences.

Trump's Tuesday remarks put space between him and the Republican establishment, which has backed away from Moore. Luther Strange (R-AL). Bannon endorsed and campaigned for Moore, who ended up thumping Strange.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, both Republicans, have both called on Moore to leave the race in light of the accusations. "He's run eight races, and this has never come up", he said. Shelby said he will "absolutely not" vote for Moore.

The other argument Trump made in his comments about Moore, essentially, is this: Moore is a Republican. "I can tell you for a fact, we do not need somebody that's going to be bad on crime, bad on borders, bad with the military, bad for the Second Amendment".

Trump said he did not want Jones to win. "We want the votes in the Senate to get this tax bill through", she said.

Again, that runs directly counter to the message from many establishment Republicans - that it isn't worth sacrificing principle exclusively to hold control of a single Senate seat.

"If the allegations are true, then he should step aside", Sanders emphasized at the time, adding that Trump did support the RNC's decision to withdraw resources from Moore's campaign. "There's a special place in hell for people who prey on children".

"If the president was running today, I bet he would not be elected because I think we have had a huge cultural shift that is 40 years in the making", the California representative CBS' "Face the Nation".
