Florida targeting Dan Mullen to fill head coaching vacancy

The Florida Gators are targeting Mississippi State's Dan Mullen as its next head football coach, according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo!

Mullen will depart the Bulldogs after nine seasons to return to Florida as its head coach. While nothing is set in stone just yet, a decision is expected to come by the end of the day on Sunday.

Mullen, who has a career 69-46 record, has a long history with Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin. Schiano has served as Ohio State's defensive coordinator for two seasons after spending three years as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mississippi State has won its last two bowl games, most recently defeating Miami (Ohio) in the St. Petersburg Bowl a year ago. He's now deciding whether to take the open Nebraska job or stay at UCF.

Stricklin and Mullen have a solid working relationship, as their time together in Starkville included a boom in high-end facilities and Mississippi State reaching No. 1 for the first time in program history 2014.

In February, Mississippi State director of athletics John Cohen announced he was giving Mullen four-year contract extension through February 2021.
