Devin Hester, special teams tormenter of the Lions and National Football League, officially retires

Posted December 15, 2017

Hester made an immediate impact as a Bears rookie in 2006, setting an National Football League single-season record with five kick return touchdowns and then eclipsing the mark with six TDs in 2007. Eric Metcalf is second on that career list with 10.

Hester had 14 punt returns for touchdowns along with five kickoff returns that also resulted in the end zone. He returned a missed field goal for a touchdown, too, giving him 20 total non-offensive touchdowns - another National Football League record.

Hester made history at The U as the first Hurricane to play offense, defense and special teams during his time in Coral Gables from 2003-05. Hester's impact wasn't only limited to his first couple years in the league; he was consistently outstanding for almost a decade.

Hester took to Twitter to announce his retirement.

In his second time ever facing Minnesota back during a 2006 matchup in Chicago, Hester stood back to receive a punt in the second quarter of a game that had yet to see points put up on the board. From 2011 through 2016, there were 49 kicks returned for a touchdown; in the previous six seasons, 95 kicks were returned for scores, four of which were by Hester.
