Weekend Box Office Report: 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Remains Leader

Posted January 01, 2018

The eighth installment of the "Star Wars" franchise became the highest grossing film in the USA for 2017 over the New Year's weekend, beating out "Beauty and the Beast". That would bring the film's box office haul to just over $1 billion before global numbers are updated, pushing the film past the lifetime gross of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which finished with $1.06 billion, but still well below Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $2 billion gross. The sequel had the second-biggest domestic opening of all time, is due to reach the $1 billion mark worldwide over the new year, and is on route to be the highest grossing film of 2017.

Third place went to that breaker of comic-book movie glass ceilings, "Wonder Woman", which lassoed $412.6 million in domestic ticket sales ($409.3 million overseas) for Warner Bros., minting two new A-list stars in the process - the actress Gal Gadot and the director Patty Jenkins.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens kicked things off in 2015 with a whopping $2.068 billion globally. It is pacing 36 percent of ahead of last year's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in cinemas now. Worldwide box office had hit a record $38.9 billion in 2015 and then edged down slightly in 2016 to $38.8 billion, so Disney-Luscasfilm's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" provided almost all of the gain for 2017.

The family's local MP Karl Turner said: "I think it's a damning indictment about good sense and fair play". Her father, Nevile Plummer, said his daughter's hair had started falling out due to stress.

Outside the top 10, Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut Molly's Game earned $2.3 million in its first full weekend, earning $5.2 million domestically since it opened in limited release on Christmas Day.

Star Wars is likely looking at some serious box office numbers for a few more years before that ceiling begins to level off. The amount does not include the sales for the Star Wars attractions at its theme parks and movie merchandising.
