Trump, Bipartisan Lawmakers Discuss Immigration Reform

Posted January 11, 2018

Lawmakers are facing a March 5 deadline, set by Trump, before the bulk of almost 700,000 work permits issued to the dreamers under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program begin to expire in bulk.

Led by Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte and Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul, the bill would curtail chain migration and end the Diversity Visa Lottery, which President Trump said is critical to any deal.

Washington has until January 19 to enact a spending measure to avoid a government shutdown.

A federal judge in California dealt a blow to the Trump administration's attempt to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals - also known as DACA - on Tuesday by temporarily blocking their ability to do so.

He also passed Gates to become the richest person in the world in 2017: once in briefly in July and again in October. Still, of those individuals whose wealth is publicly traceable, Bezos is the richest person alive.

Those who seek permanent status would have to follow existing pathways, such as marrying a USA citizen or having a company sponsor an immigrant visa. "The wall is going to happen, or we're not going to have DACA".

"Seems to me that Democrats are holding that deal hostage for a DACA negotiation and we are meeting at the White House tomorrow on a bipartisan basis with the President to see what that might look like", said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn.

Meanwhile, Trump is slated to host a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the White House to discuss immigration policy on Tuesday. The judge in Sacramento who made the ruling Tuesday said lawyers in favor of DACA clearly demonstrated that young immigrants were likely to suffer irreparable harm without court action. "The parents that we presume they brought them here that we're not talking about now, they don't wanna deport them either".

The wall now represents a complicated political question for Republicans and Democrats. They know that for every three they can get to the polls, at least two of them will vote Democrat. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) asked Trump whether he would support a "clean DACA bill now with a commitment that we go into into a comprehensive immigration reform procedure", alluding to previous iterations of immigration legislation that offer a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

A compromise - with protection for the young immigrants, often called Dreamers by their advocates, and some enhanced border security, without construction of the wall - could eventually be reached.

Pennsylvania Rep. Lou Barletta praised Trump's initial decision to rescind the DACA protections set forth by the Obama administration. "We are dealing with this problem today because Congress has failed to enforce our laws and secure our borders". "Any solution has to include the wall, because without the wall, it all doesn't work". "If they come to me with things not in love with I'm going to do it".

"The point is that we need a total reform of our immigration system, and it should not be tied to the current debate over DACA and the 'Dreamers, '" he added.
