Man suspected of rape and murder of Zainab Ansari arrested in Pakistan

Zainab's rape and murder shattered the entire nation, triggering widespread public outrage with people from all walks of life demanding an exemplary punishment for the perpetrator.

The brutal killing of Zainab Ansari, whose body was left in a rubbish dump in Kasur, east Pakistan, after she was snatched while on her way to a class, has unleashed a wave of revulsion around the country.

Sharif said the provincial forensics lab processed 1,150 samples of DNA before arresting Imran. He has confessed to the crime, the report said, citing a police official. The suspect is a serial killer based in Kasur.

Imran was presented before the ATC in tight security arrangments in Zainab murder case after he was held yesterday in Kasur following examination of his DNA sample. "I will request the political parties to support my wish", Sharif said.

Judge Llarena turned the request down, saying it was important to wait until "constitutional order" had returned to the region. The Spanish High Court issued an EU-wide arrest warrant for him, but it was not enforced by Belgium.

He praised the "untiring efforts" of the Joint Investigation Team and other government agencies for catching the "serial killer" within 14 days of the discovery of Zainab's body.

Malik Ahmed Khan, the government spokesman in Punjab province said on Tuesday that the suspect was arrested near the city of Kasur where Zainab Ansari was killed earlier this month. He expressed satisfaction with the investigation.

On January 4, Zainab had gone missing after leaving her house for her maternal aunt's house a few minutes away for religious lessons. Reports also say Khan's appearance matches with the images of the suspect caught on CCTV footage recovered by the police.

Iman had been questioned earlier by the police over the incident, but released after the victim's family called him someone "trusted".
