United States has no evidence of Syrian use of sarin gas, Mattis says

Tillerson said Russian Federation is violating a 2013 agreement it made with the USA on the removal of chemical weapons from Syria and is helping the Syrian government breach the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans their use.

"However, on February 2, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis says investigators are looking into reports that the Syrian government used sarin gas in recent chemical attacks, but there is no evidence of the gas usage so far".

The secretary of state said Russian Federation must stop vetoing UN Security Council resolutions on holding those who use such weapons accountable.

In 2013, Syria said it would give up all of its chemical weapons.

Tillerson spoke in Paris, where the U.S., France and 22 other countries launched a new organization aimed at identifying and punishing anyone who uses chemical weapons.

Activists and rescue teams said the Syrian government launched an attack Monday with suspected poisonous gas that affected almost 20 civilians in a rebel-held suburb near Damascus.

The US officials further said that Syrian authorities appeared to have embraced ground-based means for launching chemical strikes rather than the air attacks because the ground-based operations are hard to detect.

The officials also say the Islamic State group keeps using chemical weapons such as sulfur mustard and chlorine.

He was of the opinion that if worldwide community does not act quickly to tighten the screws on Mr Assad, Syria's chemical weapons could spread beyond its borders and possibly even "to United States shores".
