National Signing Day underway

Posted February 08, 2018

You could make a compelling argument that the first Wednesday in February used to be the second-biggest day on the college football calendar, behind only the day the national championship game is played.

Most teams locked up the majority of their classes in December during the new early signing period.

Texas' football account was down for a time Tuesday. Plus, follow along for some of the more interesting moments as well from the day. Georgia's class - which ranks third all-time behind Florida's 2010 class and Alabama's 2017 class according to 247Sports Composite - now boasts 12 top-100 players and seven top-25 players, all five-star recruits.

The Bulldogs claimed the top spot in the 247Sports rankings by five-star cornerback Tyson Campbell on Monday.

The same thing happened the day before signing day to Texas, though the account was re-opened about an hour later.

But Alabama still managed to lock up one of the top players in the 2018 class: 6-2, 198-pound Patrick Surtain, Jr., of Plantation, Fla., is the highest rated cornerback prospect in the modern recruiting era, and he's headed to Tuscaloosa. As is tradition, schools will usually tweet out graphics of newly signed players.

Coming off a 1-11 season and just a couple years removed from an ugly scandal involving the handling of sexual assault cases under former coach Art Briles, Baylor and coach Matt Rhule signed a top-30 class.
