Freezing weather causes 'very large' number of burst water pipes across Sussex

Thousands of British households are left suffering from water supply problems after pipes burst when snow thawed and normal weather conditions returned to the country.

"We were prepared for the poor weather when it swept in and have also been planning for the thaw and the bursts we knew it would inevitably cause".

This then caused havoc across Thames Water, South East Water, Southern Water, and Affinity Water - which cover London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Water companies must give 48 hours notice for planned outages of more than four hours.

The water companies have urged customers who still have water to limit usage by taking short showers rather than baths, turning off taps and only running washing machines on a full load.

Earlier Thames Water issued a warning about burst pipes after the recent freezing temperatures followed by a rapid thaw.

A leak on a large water main has since been repaired, and water is being restored in south west London areas of Balham, Tooting, Streatham and Wandsworth.

Tina Callaghan, who is disabled, had also come to collect bottled water and said: "You can't go to the toilet, you can't make tea".

"I've been OK", she said, but shared concerns for the "elderly and sick who can not venture out to collect water" from a station more than a mile away.

"We're aware that some customers in #IG7 #IG8 may be experiencing no water/low pressure".
