Ex-Man Utd striker key to LA Galaxy signing Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has become the latest marquee signing for LA Galaxy and the MLS on the whole - and David Beckham played a big role in making it happen.

The Galaxy nearly signed Ibrahimovic from Manchester United past year but a knee injury kept him out of action for seven months. He made 53 appearances with the club, scoring 29 goals.

After a terrific debut season with United, the 36-year-old has struggled this term with injuries and hadn't featured for Jose Mourinho's side since Boxing Day.

The front page of the LA Times sports section on Friday showed Ibrahimovic in a Galaxy jersey, with official confirmation of the move later coming from the Major League Soccer franchise.

Villanova star Donte DiVincenzo was called for his third foul with more than five minutes remaining in the first half. But foul trouble throughout the second half was too much for West Virginia to overcome after it gave up the lead.

The 36-year-old forward is Sweden's career scoring leader with 62 goals in 116 worldwide appearances and is the first player to make Champions League appearances for seven teams.

Over the course of his career, Ibrahimovic has played for some of Europe's top clubs, including Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona and Milan.

"Everyone at the club would like to thank Zlatan for his contribution to the team since his arrival and wishes him well for the future", the team said in a statement.

Ibrahimovic will occupy an worldwide roster spot with the Galaxy.

Los Angeles should give him the stage he craves and the chance to thrive for a few more years at a less demanding technical level, even if he has had to swallow his pride a little by taking a huge pay cut from his reported £180,000 a week salary at United to earn $1.5 million a year in the States. In the summer, Manchester United bought Romelu Lukaku for £75m but Ibrahimovic still returned to the club after agreeing to a deal until the end of this season. The Galaxy changed the North American league's global perception when David Beckham joined the club in a groundbreaking move in 2007.

The deal makes Ibrahimovic the latest in a long line of ageing stars who have been lured to America by the Galaxy following David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane and former England global Ashley Cole.

The Swede could wait to make his first start against Los Angeles next month in what is the MLS' newest derby.
