Trump Tower fire: 1 killed; talks over USA president's sprinkler-free building

An investigation was underway Sunday into a blaze in Trump Tower that left one man dead and sent six firefighters to the hospital.

Twitter users posted pictures of flames shooting out of windows on the 50th floor. The cause of the fire was not immediately apparent.

Brassner was a friend of the late artist Andy Warhol and is mentioned several times in the legendary New Yorker's 1989 autobiography, The Andy Warhol Diaries. The Fire Department of NY upgraded the fire, which it initially granted two-alarm status.

President Trump later tweeted that the fire was out and said that firefighters had done a good job.

The department said 200 firefighters and EMS members were at the scene of the fire to bring the blaze under control.

The commissioner said the upper floors that are home to residences do not have fire sprinklers. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Trump lobbied against a bill that would have required sprinklers to be installed in all residential buildings in New York, backing down only after existing buildings like his own were allowed to be grandfathered in, the New York Daily News reported.

Then one of New York's most prominent real estate developers, Trump in 1999 rang city officials to argue against proposed legislation that would have required high-rise landlords to install the systems following fatal high-rise fires in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The headquarters of the Trump Organization are on the 26th floor. A roof top fire affecting a heating and cooling unit in broke out at the building in January.
