Trump's lawyers on Friday sought to intervene in Cohen's criminal proceedings, citing worries about federal agents rifling through attorney-client information that may be related to Trump. When he introduced himself to the judge in order to ask to be heard, Wood seemed to indicate that she was already aware of his identity.

"Clearly, the prosecutors regard Trump and Cohen as potential co-conspirators", he said.

"Defendants will be substantially prejudiced if compelled to proceed with this case while the criminal investigation related to Mr. Cohen is ongoing, given the substantial overlap between the facts in this action and the criminal investigation, and Mr. Cohen's status as is a key witness." states the filing by attorneys Brent Blakely and Charles Harder.

Now, thanks to new court filings we have a better idea.

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's personal lawyer who the Justice Department announced has been under criminal investigation for months.

Monday's raids of lawyer Michael Cohen's home and office followed a referral by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who for almost a year has been looking into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow. Mueller's office referred the case about his business dealings to NY but hasn't been involved since, the Manhattan prosecutors said. On Monday, federal officials collected documents and other materials pertaining to Cohen's legal work at the behest of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, according to The New York Times. They claim it's protected by attorney-client privilege. Prosecutors said the raids were part of a months-long investigation into Cohen.

"We have every reason to believe that some of the documents that were seized relate to my client", the lawyer Michael Avenatti told the hearing.

From there, Cohen became a fixture in the president's organization. According to the U.S. Attorney's filing, Cohen was never really integrated into the firm in the first place and only brought five clients to it, for which there is no available evidence those clients were ever billed.

Cohen is known to tape conversations with associates and store them, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

Avenatti, who is not admitted in the Southern District, was later allowed by Wood to weigh in on the issue of Cohen's attempts to assert privilege over which clients he had.

Cohen worked as a high-level executive in the Trump Organization for almost a decade.

Before the adjournment, lawyers for Trump and Cohen told a federal judge in NY that they believe some of the documents and devices seized from Cohen during an FBI raid are protected by attorney-client privilege, and they want a chance to review the material before prosecutors get to examine them. Or, they said, the court could appoint a special master for that objective.
