Malaysia axes project to build high-speed rail link with Singapore

More recently, Dr Mahathir's announcement that Malaysia is pulling out of the widely anticipated KL-Singapore High Speed Rail project has contributed to talk that the strained relations Singapore and Malaysia shared before Mahathir retired and came back might return.

Mahathir says the 350-kilometer (218-mile) rail project is too costly and that Malaysia "will make no money at all from this operation".

The project is out for tender and was scheduled to be completed by 2026.

Implying that the stunning election upset he led across the causeway may have a ripple effect in Singapore, Dr Mahathir said: "I think the people of Singapore, like the people in Malaysia, must be exhausted of having the same government, the same party since independence".

Roth's novel American Pastoral is widely considered to be his masterpiece, winning him the Pulitzer Prize in 1998. He won numerous awards, and was often talked about as a contender for the Nobel prize.

"It is a final decision, but it will take time because we have an agreement with Singapore", Mahathir said.

Axing the project, a 350km-long high speed rail connection linking the two countries' capital, said Dr Mahathir, would help the country reduce the government's total debt, which he said exceeded RM1 trillion.

"I also request the new government to take care of their welfare as they are dedicated members and officers who will serve the government today with full loyalty", he said.

Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad made a bold statement during a recent interview with The Financial Times, seemingly taking a jibe at the ruling party here.

What's pushing Chinese high-speed train projects off the rails overseas?

The project was planned to stretch 688km, connecting the South China Sea at the Thai border in the east with the shipping routes of the Strait of Malacca in the west.

Early this month, Mr Mohd Nur Ismal Mohamed Kamal, chief executive of MyHSR Corporation, the state firm tasked with implementing the HSR on the Malaysian side, estimated that Malaysia could lose RM209 billion in gross national income if the project was scrapped.

On top of that, the prime minister announced that while the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be officially abolished on 1st June this year, the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will be implemented on 1st September 2018.
