The company indicated a day earlier it would shutter a combined 72 Sears and Kmart locations, but pulled some from the list "as they are being evaluated further", according to a statement.

The company said closing sales for the 72 stores would begin in the "near future".

Despite several cost-cutting measures that have trimmed billions of dollars in expenses, Sears Holdings continues to lose money, and no one is sure it will ever regain its footing. The list of stores closing was released, and no Nebraska locations are included.

Earlier in the day Sears said it would be closing 72 stores, but made a decision to further evaluate nine locations. It also has showrooms in Apex and Knightdale and an outlet store in Garner. The retailer put up for auction the property its stores occupy at Mid Rivers Mall and South County Center.

The list of stores that will close by early September contained 48 Sears and 15 Kmarts.

The company previously announced closures for dozens of KMart stores across the country.
