Trump still pondering Supreme Court pick as big reveal nears

Posted July 09, 2018

Mr Trump is likely to announce his nominees to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, Trump's top contenders for the vacancy at this time are federal appeals judges Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge, said a person familiar with Trump's thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly. "We've been talking about this for 36 years going all the way back to the nomination of Sandra O'Connor, and after that you only have a single individual on the court who has expressly said he would overturn Roe".

McConnell also reportedly warned Trump that nominating Amy Coney Barrett, an extremist social conservative who wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, could lose the votes of Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. The White House has been preparing information materials on all four, who were part of a longer list of 25 names vetted by conservative groups.

Trump is set to announce his nominee in a televised address on Monday evening.

The New York Times on Sunday reported that the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, was strongly urging Trump to opt for either Hardiman or Kethledge on grounds that the other two might be impossible to get confirmed.

Hardiman has built a reputation as a reliable conservative on the federal appeals court in Philadelphia, where he has served alongside one of Trump's sisters, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, who is said to have recommended Hardiman for the Supreme Court vacancy a year ago.

Jones said that regardless of who the nominee is, "we're going to give them a very, very good, hard and fair look to determine what I believe to be the best interest of my constituents, but also the country".

"Given their vision of a politicized judiciary, we should not be surprised when Democrats cry bloody murder at the announcement of the president's Supreme Court nominee", the retiring senator writes.

The president's only public statement about the choice confronting him came in a tweet from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he was spending the weekend.
