After surveillance video from a business showed Hernandez traveling south on Highway 1 into Monterey County, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office took over the search on Thursday.
She was last seen on CCTV at a filling station on 6 July, about 80km north of where she was found. She told investigators she had swerved to avoid an animal.

Number one, to survive a 250-foot plunge with a vehicle to the ocean, to the rocky bottom of the ocean there, to keep your wits about you, she had water coming into her auto". She was spotted on Friday by two hikers who found her yelling for help on the remote Monterey County beach. "I couldn't believe that we had finally found each other".
