Urban Meyer on hot seat over handling of assistant abuse claims

Posted August 03, 2018

Ohio State placed Meyer on paid administrative leave Wednesday while it investigates claims that his wife knew about allegations of abuse against former Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith, who was sacked last week.

It's alleged that Shelley Meyer had intimate knowledge that the wife of former OSU wide receivers coach Zach Smith, Courtney Smith, was being physically abused by the assistant.

Of course, whether Shelley Meyer really did tell her husband about Zach Smith is the subject of Ohio State's investigation.

At issue is whether Meyer knew about domestic violence allegations against Zach Smith made by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith.

Zach Smith had been on Meyer's staff since Meyer's days at the University of Florida, but he was sacked last week after McMurphy dug up multiple police reports alleging domestic violence against Zach Smith.

The crux of what investigators will be looking for is whether Meyer followed proper protocols when and if he received information about allegations regarding Smith.

Meyer acknowledged last week that he had been aware of a 2009 domestic-abuse incident in Gainesville. But the restaurant's website, as first noted by Columbus Business First, no longer contains the page dedicated to Meyer as "head breakfast coach". He can either be one of the guys in Ohio State history, or the guy at Clemson.

"The immediate reaction was 'Urban Meyer can not survive this, ' and that's before I even finished the first paragraph". Those photos show bruises, cuts and marks on Courtney Smith. "I was never told about anything and nothing ever came to light. I know nothing about it". It's not been confirmed by Courtney Smith or anyone else that Shelley told Urban what she knew. The lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss say Ohio State facilitated the abuse by ignoring complaints.
